Your First Surf Lesson Week in Essaouira

A first surf week is easy to book badly. People take a bed, then a lesson, then find out the Atlantic is cold enough that the wetsuit was a third purchase, and that in summer the only clean water is before the wind arrives. Essaouira is one of the kindest places on this coast to stand up for the first time, if the week is shaped around that. Here is the week we would actually plan for someone who has never stood on a board, and the one booking that covers it.
1. What the bay gives a complete beginner
The bay of Essaouira is a long sandy beach break, partly sheltered by the island of Mogador. There is no reef, and the inside section stays shallow for a long way. That is why the schools on this beach spend their mornings with people who have never paddled. You are not being dropped on a point and told to keep up.
The wind is the part that decides the shape of the week.
- April to September is wind season. The Atlantic trade winds usually fill in through the late morning. A first lesson belongs at the start of the day, while the bay is still glassy. By afternoon the same water belongs to kites and wings.
- October to March is swell season. The waves are better organised, the wind is lighter, and a lesson can sit later in the day without being blown out. The town is quieter too.
The longer version of that split is in our guide to choosing a surf hostel here, and in the Essaouira versus Taghazout comparison. For a first lesson the short version is enough: sand, no reef, and an early start whenever the alizés are blowing.
You do not need to sleep on the sand to make that start. Chill Art Hostel is inside the medina, a five to fifteen minute walk to the beach, past the ramparts and the fishing port. Cars do not reach the door. That walk is the commute.
2. A first week here is two or three mornings
People hear "surf week" and picture seven lessons. That is not how a first stand-up works, and it is not how our Surf pack is built. The pack is two nights with two lessons, or three nights with three. One activity per day. Taxes included.
Two or three mornings is the useful length. The first session is mostly about where your feet go and how a broken wave feels. The second is where a few rides actually happen. The third is where it starts to feel repeatable. Another four lessons in the same week mostly repeat the third.
If your trip is longer than the pack, the extra nights are a normal stay. Live availability and rates are on the direct booking page. We keep nightly room rates off this page, because they move with the season. The lessons stay inside the pack, on mornings you are here to use.
Check-in is at 14:00 and check-out is at 11:30. Reception is open all night and there is no curfew, which matters if you are coming from Marrakech: the road is about two and a half to three hours, and the bus often arrives after dark. Essaouira-Mogador airport is about twenty minutes from the medina. Send reception your arrival time with the booking. A lesson is only useful on a morning you are actually here, and an afternoon landing does not give you that morning.
3. What each morning is for
Nobody reputable promises you will be trimming down the line by day two. On this beach an honest first block looks like this.
- Morning one: feet, then whitewater. Stance and pop-up on the sand, then into the inside section, where the waves have already broken. The aim is one or two rides to the beach, on your stomach or on your feet, and a clear idea of which way the whitewater is going. Style is not the point.
- Morning two: choosing a wave. Less time being told when to stand, more time paddling for a wave that will actually carry you. Most people get several short rides. The wipeouts are the lesson.
- Morning three, on a three-night pack: making it repeatable. The same pop-up, a little further along, and a better sense of when the wind has finished the session. You leave knowing whether you want another week of this. That is the only decision a first block needs to produce.
The lesson includes a board and a wetsuit. Bring a swimsuit and a towel, not a board. The Atlantic here stays cool in August as well as in January, so a wetsuit billed as an extra elsewhere is a real cost. It is included here.
4. What you do with the rest of the day
A lesson morning from inside the walls is short on logistics. You walk out through streets that are still opening, you surf, you walk back. Breakfast is the meal you come home to. Free breakfast is included on every pack, the Surf pack included.
The middle of the day belongs to the medina: grilled fish at the port, the ramparts, the woodworkers' souk, a hammam if your shoulders have an opinion about the pop-up. The pack also includes the shared kitchen, Wi-Fi and the rooftop. In a dorm, your bag goes in a locker while you are out.
Leave the summer afternoon alone. From April to September the wind usually owns the bay by then, and fighting it is how beginners decide they cannot surf. Use the afternoon for the town, or watch the kites if the other sport is starting to look interesting. Our kitesurfing guide is the one to read if the wind turns out to be what you came for.
At 18:00 there is tea and pastries, on the house, which is when the building actually meets. Sunset is on the rooftop, 360° over the medina and the Atlantic, which is where people compare who stood up and who ate sand.
Book the lessons and the bed together
The Surf pack is the week above: two or three nights, one lesson a day, board and wetsuit, breakfast included. Pay by card on the pack page. Paying in dirhams uses the same page, then a bank transfer with the manager.
See the Surf pack Ask reception on WhatsApp5. What the Surf pack costs, and what that number includes
Booked separately, a first surf trip is a bed, a lesson and a wetsuit, each priced for someone walking in off the beach. The pack is one number. Solo is a bed in a dorm and the price is per person. Duo is a private room and the price is the total for two people, not per person. Two nights means two lessons, three nights means three. Taxes are included.
| Surf pack | Card, in euros | Bank transfer, in dirhams |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, 2 nights | €78 | 820 DH |
| Solo, 3 nights | €120 | 1 230 DH |
| Duo, 2 nights | €170 | 1 800 DH |
| Duo, 3 nights | €255 | 2 700 DH |
The euro amount is what the card payment charges. The dirham amount is the published price for a bank transfer, and it stays put when the exchange rate moves. Along with the bed and the lesson, every pack includes free breakfast, Wi-Fi, the rooftop and the shared kitchen.
Booking is a short form on the pack page: Surf, Solo or Duo, two or three nights, your arrival date, your name and a phone number. Card payment opens on that option. If you are paying in dirhams, the same step puts you on WhatsApp with the manager at +212 600 150 138 for the bank details. A question before you pay, whether your dates are wind or swell and whether you want a dorm or a private room, goes to reception on +212 605 815 025.
Price is not the reason to book with us. The big platforms are useful for seeing what exists in a town you have never visited. Booking here is how you talk to the people who will be at the door, and how the lesson mornings are attached to the stay before you land. Bookings are non-refundable, and that is on the page before you pay.
6. Who this week is for
- You have never surfed, or you tried once and mostly drank the sea. This bay is built for that. Sand, no reef, a long shallow section, and a lesson that assumes nothing.
- You are travelling with someone who will not get in. They get a UNESCO medina, the port and the ramparts while you are out. You meet again at breakfast.
- You are coming in July or August and you want waves all day. Surf early and give the afternoon to the town. If waves are the whole point of the trip, October to March is the window, and the Taghazout comparison is worth reading before the dates are fixed.
- You already surf and you want a serious lineup. The bay will feel gentle. That is the point of it for a first week, and the limit of it after that.
If the dates are already fixed, the Surf pack is on the pack page. If you only need a bed around it, or you want to see the rooms first, start from live availability and write to us with the mornings you hope to be in the water.
Frequently asked questions
Is Essaouira a good place for a first surf lesson?
Yes. The bay is a sandy beach break with no reef and a long shallow section, which is why it is used for complete beginners. From April to September the clean window is the morning, before the trade winds fill in. From October to March the swell is better organised and the wind is lighter, so a lesson can sit later in the day.
How many lessons are in the Surf pack?
Two nights include two lessons and three nights include three, one per day. Each lesson includes a board and a wetsuit. The pack also includes the bed, free breakfast, Wi-Fi, the rooftop and the shared kitchen. Taxes are included. Free breakfast is included on every pack, not only Surf.
How much does the Surf pack cost?
Solo is a dorm bed, priced per person: €78 (820 DH) for two nights and €120 (1 230 DH) for three. Duo is a private room, priced as the total for two people: €170 (1 800 DH) for two nights and €255 (2 700 DH) for three. The euro figure is the card charge. The dirham figure is the bank-transfer price and does not change with the exchange rate. Taxes are included.
Can I surf in the afternoon in summer?
Usually it is not worth planning. From April to September the wind builds through the late morning and the bay turns over to kitesurf and wingfoil. Take the lesson early and give the afternoon to the medina. Between October and March the wind is lighter and the surf window is longer.
Do I need my own board, and how do I book?
No. The lesson includes a board and a wetsuit. Book the Surf pack on the pack page: choose Solo or Duo and two or three nights, then pay by card in euros, or ask the manager on WhatsApp at +212 600 150 138 for a dirham bank transfer. Questions before you pay go to reception on +212 605 815 025. Extra nights, or a room with no lesson, are on the direct booking page, where the live nightly rates sit.
Adding nights around the lessons?
Live availability and rates are on our own booking page. The Surf pack, lessons and breakfast included, is booked on the pack page.
