Wingfoil for Beginners in Essaouira

A first wingfoil try gets oversold in both directions. Either it is a sport you cannot touch until you own the gear, or someone promises you will be up on the foil by the second afternoon. Neither is true on this bay. The wing is small, there are no lines, the water is shallow sand, and two or three sessions is a try rather than a finished rider. Here is what the sport is, why this beach is the right place for that try, when the wind is worth booking, and the one booking that covers the bed and the lesson.
1. What wingfoiling is
A wing is a small sail you hold in your hands. There is no kite overhead and no lines to untangle. If it goes wrong, you drop the wing and float. That is the part that makes a first try feel possible.
The other half is the foil: the board lifts clear of the water once there is enough speed. Getting onto the foil takes longer than getting up on a kiteboard. Wingfoil is the easier sport to start and the slower one to master. If you have one week and you want to be riding at the end of it, kite is the shorter path. That choice is set out in our kitesurfing guide. This page is the first try, not the finished rider.
The wing also works in lighter wind than a kite. In a bay with as much wind as this one, that matters less than it does at home, which is why both sports share the same afternoons.
2. Why the bay of Essaouira suits a first try
The bay is a wide, shallow, sandy crescent, partly sheltered by the island of Mogador. There is no reef and no rocks to get washed onto. The Atlantic trade winds, the alizés, arrive side-onshore. Schools teach on this beach for that reason, rather than at the spots north of town. A first session belongs here.
For a wing, one extra fact matters. There are no lines, and a bad moment means you drop the wing and float. The bay is flat, and in summer it is busy. That is a limit if you already ride. For a first try it is the point: sand, water that stays shallow for a long way, and the town behind you.
You do not need to sleep on the sand to use it. Chill Art Hostel is inside the medina, a five to fifteen minute walk to the beach, past the ramparts and the fishing port. Cars do not reach the door. The walk is the commute, and you come back through the fish grills.
3. The wind season is April to September
Essaouira has some wind most of the year. The season worth booking a first wing try around is April to September.
- April to September is wind season. The alizés usually fill in through the late morning. The morning stays the surf window. By afternoon the same water belongs to kites and wings, which is when a first wing session sits.
- July and August are the strongest and most reliable months. Beginners can find the bay overpowered by mid-afternoon, so the useful part of the day is the earlier wind, before it peaks.
- October to March is swell season. The wind is lighter and much less predictable, and those months suit surfing. A first wing try wants the reliable afternoon wind, so keep it inside April to September.
The month-by-month calendar, including the spots up the coast, is in the kitesurfing guide. If your dates are already fixed and you are not sure which sport they suit, write to reception before you pay. A surf week and a wing week use different parts of the same day. Our first surf-lesson week is the other shape of this bay.
4. What a first session looks like
A first afternoon is not a finished ride. Anyone who promises you will leave it up on the foil is selling. On this beach the honest version is simpler, and it does not pretend to be a full syllabus.
You walk out of the medina once the wind is in. The session uses the bay: sand, no reef, shallow for a long way. The gear is included in the lesson. You do not bring a wing or a board. Bring a swimsuit and a towel. The Atlantic here stays cool in August as well as in January, so the water is not the air temperature.
What that first session can honestly be is the wing itself. It is small, it has no lines, and letting go of it is the safety. The foil is the long part. It takes longer than a kiteboard, and a first afternoon does not finish it. You come off the water knowing whether you want the next session. That is the decision a first try is for.
The Kite / Wingfoil pack is two sessions or three, one a day. Two nights means two activities, three nights means three. It is a first try, not a course that ends with you riding back to where you started. If the foil turns out to be the sport, you already know the bay and the walk. If it does not, the afternoon was on the water and the rest of the day was the medina, which is a good use of Essaouira either way.
5. What you do with the rest of the day
A session from inside the walls is short on logistics. In wind season the wing sits in the afternoon, after the surfers have had the morning, so breakfast is the meal before you go out. Free breakfast is included on every pack, the Kite / Wingfoil pack included.
The part of the day that is not on the water belongs to the medina: grilled fish at the port, the ramparts, the woodworkers' souk, a hammam if your arms have an opinion about holding a wing. The pack also includes the shared kitchen, Wi-Fi and the rooftop. In a dorm, your bag goes in a locker while you are out.
At 18:00 there is tea and pastries, on the house. Sunset is on the rooftop, 360° over the medina and the Atlantic, which is where people compare who held the wing and who watched from the sand.
Check-in is at 14:00 and check-out is at 11:30. Reception is open all night and there is no curfew. The road from Marrakech is about two and a half to three hours, and the bus often arrives after dark. Essaouira-Mogador airport is about twenty minutes from the medina. Send reception your arrival time with the booking. A session only exists on a day you are here, and a bus that gets in after dark does not give you that afternoon.
Book the session and the bed together
The Kite / Wingfoil pack is the try above: two or three nights, one lesson a day, gear included, free breakfast included. Pay by card on the pack page. Paying in dirhams uses the same page, then a bank transfer with the manager.

Booked separately, a first wing try is a bed and a lesson, each priced for someone walking in off the beach. The pack is one number. Solo is a bed in a dorm and the price is per person. Duo is a private room and the price is the total for two people, not per person. Two nights means two lessons, three nights means three. Taxes are included.
| Kite / Wingfoil pack | Card, in euros | Bank transfer, in dirhams |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, 2 nights | €125 | 1 320 DH |
| Solo, 3 nights | €187 | 1 980 DH |
| Duo, 2 nights | €265 | 2 800 DH |
| Duo, 3 nights | €395 | 4 200 DH |
The euro amount is what the card payment charges. The dirham amount is the published price for a bank transfer, and it stays put when the exchange rate moves. Along with the bed and the lesson, every pack includes free breakfast, Wi-Fi, the rooftop and the shared kitchen. The same pack covers kite or wingfoil, so tell the team the lesson is wingfoil. The question on the pack page asks which activity.
Booking is a short form on the pack page: Kite / Wingfoil, Solo or Duo, two or three nights, your arrival date, your name and a phone number. Card payment opens on that option. If you are paying in dirhams, the same step puts you on WhatsApp with the manager at +212 600 150 138 for the bank details. A question before you pay goes to reception on +212 605 815 025.
Price is not the reason to book with us. The big platforms are useful for seeing what exists in a town you have never visited. Booking here is how you talk to the people who will be at the door, and how the sessions are attached to the stay before you land. Bookings are non-refundable, and that is on the page before you pay.
7. Who this first try is for
- You have never held a wing. Shallow sand, a side-onshore wind, and a wing with no lines. That is the case for trying it here.
- You looked at kitesurfing and wanted the version you can drop. Read the kite guide before you decide. If riding by the end of the week is the goal, kite is the faster sport. If a patient first try is the goal, this is it.
- You are travelling with someone who will not get in. They get a UNESCO medina, the port and the ramparts while you are out. You meet again for tea at 18:00.
- You already ride and you want a serious wave spot. The bay will feel gentle. Moulay Bouzerktoun, about 25 km north, is for experienced riders, with rock and current, and it is not a first session. The kite guide covers that coast.
If the dates are already fixed, the Kite / Wingfoil pack is on the pack page. Free breakfast is included on every pack. If you only need a bed around the sessions, or you want to see the rooms first, start from live availability and write to us with the afternoons you hope to be on the water.

April to September. The trade winds usually fill in through the late morning, and the afternoon is when the wings are on the bay. July and August are the strongest months, and beginners can find the bay overpowered by mid-afternoon. From October to March the wind is lighter and less predictable, and those months suit surfing. The month-by-month calendar is in the kitesurfing guide.
