Essaouira in Winter: Why the Off-Season Works

The Chill Art Hostel rooftop terrace, with blue wooden lattice screens, looking over the Essaouira medina rooftops toward the Atlantic

October to March is swell season in Essaouira. The Atlantic sends a bigger, cleaner swell, the wind is lighter, and the medina is calmer because fewer people are in it. That is the off-season, and it is a sound reason to come when the trip matches it. This page is what those months are good for, what the weather asks of you in general, and which pack to book. The month-by-month calendar is the seasons guide. The bag is the packing guide. Here you choose a Surf pack, or a Cooking pack when the day should not depend on the beach.

1. What winter is good for

Winter on this coast is the half of the year when the water is the point. The swell is bigger and better organised than in the wind months. The wind is lighter, so a lesson can sit later in the day than it does from April to September, when the trade winds fill in through the late morning. Fewer people are in the water, and fewer people are in the lanes. The medina settles into a working town: the fishing fleet still lands, the grills at the port still cook, the daily market is still a market, and the woodworkers' souk keeps its hours.

That is the trip these months suit.

  • Surf, including a first lesson. The bay is a long sandy beach break, partly sheltered by the island of Mogador. There is no reef, and the inside stays shallow for a long way. Cleaner swell and lighter wind are the conditions a first lesson wants.
  • The town on foot. The ramparts, the fishing port and the souks are the same short walk they are in August, with less of a crowd on them.
  • A slower stay. Days are shorter. That suits the rooftop at 18:00, tea and pastries on the house, and a medina you can learn a few streets of.

Kite and wingfoil belong to the other half of the year. They want the afternoon trade wind, and the months for it run from April to September. The short version of that is further down.

The last ten days of December are the busy patch inside an otherwise quiet season: a holiday rush, then the town thins out again. And some seasonal businesses on the beach run shorter hours. The port, the market and the souks carry on.

Which single month suits which traveller, including the daytime feel of each one, is the seasons guide. This page stays on the season as a whole, and on the pack.

2. What the weather asks of you

The shape of a winter day is simpler than a month table. Days are shorter than in summer. Mornings can be bright. Rain comes in stretches, mostly from November to February, and a stretch rarely runs to a full week. Between those stretches the wind is the light wind of swell season.

Evenings are the part people under-pack for. The medina is stone, and stone holds the cold once the sun is gone, so the rooftop at 18:00 wants a warm layer. What goes in the bag, season by season, is the packing guide.

The Atlantic stays cold enough for a wetsuit in every month, winter included. A winter surf lesson uses a thicker suit, a 4/3. The Surf pack includes the board and the wetsuit. Bring a swimsuit and a towel.

On a wet morning the shared kitchen is still there, and so is the cooking class. That is the next choice.

3. Why a Surf pack is the winter booking

Surf is the pack this season is built for. One activity a day: two nights come with two lessons, three nights with three. Solo is a bed in a mixed dorm and the price is per person. Duo is a private room and the price is the total for two people. Taxes are included. Free breakfast is included on every pack, with Wi-Fi, the rooftop and the shared kitchen.

From April to September the clean water is early, because the trade winds fill in through the late morning. From October to March the swell is the reason to be here, the wind is lighter, and a lesson can sit later in the day. The lesson includes the board and the wetsuit either way.

Chill Art Hostel is inside the medina, at 21 Rue Abderrahamane Eddakhil, two minutes on foot from the ramparts and the fishing port, and five to fifteen minutes from the beach. Cars do not reach the door. Check-in is at 14:00 and check-out is at 11:30. Reception is open all night and there is no curfew. The road from Marrakech takes about two and a half to three hours, and the bus often arrives after dark. An evening arrival is the journey. Three nights lets that first evening be the road and still puts the lessons on full days. Two nights fits when you are here in time for the first morning and two sessions are the trip.

What those mornings contain, for someone who has never stood up, is the first surf-lesson week. Anyone who already wants a heavier lineup will find this bay gentle. It suits a first lesson, and it stays that gentle afterwards.

Solo against Duo, for any month, is the 2 or 3 night pack guide. Nights beyond the pack, or a room with no lesson attached, are a normal stay on the direct booking page. Live nightly rates sit on that page.

4. Cooking, when the day should not depend on the beach

Cooking is the other winter booking. Take it when the medina is the point, when someone in the pair will stay out of the water, or when you want the days to hold their shape without a beach.

A class is a morning of three to four hours. The first half is the souk, which is a walk through the medina. The second half is the pot, then lunch. The day does not need a swell, and it does not need the wind to stay light. It does need a morning you are not leaving at 11:30, so it does not sit on the day you check out.

A wet morning is where this pack earns its place. The market half is outside, under the same sky as the rest of the town, and the cooking half is indoors. The shared kitchen is there the day after, for a second try while the lesson is fresh. What you actually cook is the cooking-class guide. On the pack it is one class a day, with the bed.

One booking is one pack. Surf and Cooking are a choice made before you pay. Anyone who wants both writes to reception first.

5. Kite and wingfoil belong to April through September

Kite and wingfoil use the afternoon trade wind. The season worth booking a first try around runs from April to September. October is the month that wind drops and the swell comes back. From November to March the wind is lighter and less predictable, which is why those months suit surfing. A winter stay whose purpose is the kite is aimed at the wrong season for the sport.

The pack is still on the page, and the price below is the current one. It is one pack for both sports. The gear is included. You tell the team whether you want the kite or the wing. The wing is the sail you hold, with no lines. Dates inside the wind season belong to the kitesurfing guide and the wingfoil guide, then to the pack page. They are a summer booking.

6. What it costs, and how to book

Each figure is the pack: the bed and the activity. Solo is per person. Duo is the total for two, and doubling it is how the page gets misread. The euro amount is what the card charges. The dirham amount is the published price for a bank transfer, and it stays put when the exchange rate moves. Taxes are included. The same figures are on the pack page in any month.

Along with the bed and the activity, every pack includes free breakfast, Wi-Fi, the rooftop and the shared kitchen. At 18:00 there is tea and pastries, on the house.

The form on the pack page asks for the pack, Solo or Duo, two or three nights, the arrival date, a name and a phone number. Card payment opens on that option. Paying in dirhams is a bank transfer via WhatsApp: the same step reaches the manager at +212 600 150 138 for the bank details. A question before you pay goes to reception on +212 605 815 025. The team speaks French, English and Arabic.

Bookings are non-refundable, and the page says so before you pay. What you are arranging is the bed and the sessions on those dates, with the people who will be at the door.

Frequently asked questions

Is winter a good time to visit Essaouira?

October to March is swell season: a bigger, cleaner Atlantic swell, lighter wind, fewer people in the water, and a calmer medina. It suits surf, walking the town, and a slower stay. Kite and wingfoil want the afternoon trade wind from April to September. The last ten days of December are the busier patch inside an otherwise quiet season. The month-by-month calendar is the seasons guide.

What is the weather like in Essaouira in winter?

Days are shorter than in summer, with bright spells and rainy stretches that sit mostly from November to February and rarely run to a full week. The wind is lighter than in the wind season. Evenings in the stone medina want a warm layer. The Atlantic stays cold enough for a wetsuit all year, and a winter surf lesson uses a 4/3, included with the board in the Surf pack. The month-by-month feel is in the seasons guide, and the bag is in the packing guide.

Should I book Surf, Cooking or Kite for a winter trip?

Book Surf. From October to March the swell is better organised and the wind is lighter, so a lesson can sit later in the day than it can in summer. The bay is sand, with no reef, and a long shallow inside. The pack includes the board and a wetsuit. Book Cooking when the medina is the point, when someone will stay out of the water, or when the day should not depend on the beach: a morning of three to four hours, souk then lunch. Book Kite / Wingfoil for April to September, when the afternoon wind is the reason to come. One booking is one pack. To combine two activities, write to reception before you pay. Free breakfast is included on every pack.

How much do the Surf and Cooking packs cost?

Solo is per person and Duo is the total for two. Surf is €78 (820 DH) and €120 (1 230 DH) solo, €170 (1 800 DH) and €255 (2 700 DH) duo. Cooking is €89 (920 DH) and €130 (1 380 DH) solo, €170 (1 800 DH) and €254.99 (2 700 DH) duo. Order is two nights, then three. Kite / Wingfoil, for April to September, is €125 (1 320 DH), €187 (1 980 DH), €265 (2 800 DH) and €395 (4 200 DH) in the same order. The euro figure is the card charge. The dirham figure is the bank-transfer price. Taxes are included. Free breakfast is included on every pack.

How do I book a winter pack, and is breakfast included?

Book on the pack page: Surf or Cooking, then Solo or Duo, two or three nights, and pay by card in euros. Paying in dirhams is a bank transfer via WhatsApp with the manager at +212 600 150 138.
