Essaouira guide
Essaouira on a Budget, Without Skipping the Experiences

A small budget in Essaouira is mostly a walking budget. The medina, the ramparts, the beach and the fishing port do not charge an entrance. Meals can stay at stall prices. The part that surprises people is the bed plus a lesson, because those often become two bills after you land. A pack works the other way: the bed, the activity and free breakfast are one figure, on the page, before you pay. This guide is the free part, the cheap part, and then that figure. Book Surf if the water is the point. Book Cooking if the day should be the market and a table.
1. What costs nothing
The walled medina is a UNESCO site, and it is a working town, not a ticketed one. You walk in. The streets were laid out as a grid, and the whole place takes about twenty minutes to cross, so a morning of getting lost still ends at a gate you recognise. Looking is the activity: the lanes, the woodworkers' souk, the daily market. Buying is optional. Asking the price out loud, before you buy, is the whole skill.
Four walks cover a day, and none of them needs a ticket.
- The ramparts. The sea wall over the Atlantic is a public walk. Sunset is the busy hour. Morning is the same view, with the fishing boats going out.
- The fishing port. The fleet lands in the morning. Watching that, and walking the harbour, costs nothing. Eating there is a separate decision, and it is in the next section.
- The beach. The main bay starts just south of the walls. From inside the medina it is a five to fifteen minute walk, depending on the lane you start in. The sand is free. A lesson on it is not, which is why the lesson belongs in the pack and the walk does not.
- The end of the day. If you are staying, the rooftop at Chill Art Hostel looks over the medina and the Atlantic, and tea and pastries at 18:00 are on the house. That is for guests. The public version of the same hour is the ramparts.
How to spend those hours across three days is the three-day itinerary. This page stays on the cost.
2. Eating on the cheap end
The full version, including the mistakes that make people overpay, is where to eat in Essaouira. For a budget, the useful split is which of the four ways of eating you are in. Stalls and the port grills are the cheap end. Terrace tables are where the same appetite costs more, because you are also paying for the view.
The ranges below are the ones in that eating guide. Prices move, so treat them as the shape of a day, not a quote.
- Msemen or harcha from a stall: about 3 to 8 DH.
- Bissara, the fava bean bowl, mostly in winter: about 5 to 15 DH.
- A sardine or fried-fish sandwich near the port gates: about 15 to 30 DH.
- Grilled fish at the port: about 60 to 120 DH a person, bought by weight. Agree the total, including bread and salad, before anything goes on the charcoal.
- A tagine in a small medina kitchen: about 50 to 90 DH, with bread.
Two people who take breakfast and lunch from stalls, and a tagine at dinner, land around 150 to 200 DH for the day. The same two people can spend that on one terrace dinner. Lunch is the main meal. Place Moulay Hassan is the expensive square; three streets inland is the ordinary one. Stalls, the grills and most small kitchens are cash, and small notes help.
On a pack, free breakfast is already included, so the morning stall is a want, not the plan. A cooking class ends in lunch, which takes one restaurant meal out of that day. The shared kitchen is there for the other days: the port sells fish in the morning, the market inside the walls sells vegetables in the amounts you actually need, and the kitchen comes with every stay.
3. The town is a walk
The medina is closed to cars. Once you are inside the walls, the ramparts, the port, the souks and the beach do not need a taxi. Chill Art Hostel is at 21 Rue Abderrahamane Eddakhil, two minutes on foot from the ramparts and the fishing port. The beach is the five to fifteen minutes above. A taxi is for arriving, or for leaving the walls, not for the day itself.
The road from Marrakech takes about two and a half to three hours, roughly 190 km. Alone, the bus is the ordinary way to do it: a fixed fare per seat, rather than a car priced for the vehicle. Supratours stops outside Bab Marrakech, so the last part is a walk in through the gate. CTM stops towards the new town, so that arrival ends with a short petit taxi. Either way the vehicle stops at a gate. If someone with a cart offers to carry the bag, agree the tip before you start walking. Each option, and where it drops you, is the Marrakech to Essaouira guide.
Essaouira-Mogador airport is about twenty minutes from the medina. Send reception your arrival time with the booking. Check-in is at 14:00, check-out is at 11:30, reception is open all night and there is no curfew. A bus that lands after dark is a normal arrival. It is not a wasted night, and it is not a lesson.
4. When a small trip is easier to keep small
The month changes how hard the town is to do on foot, and how full the paid version of the day is. November to February is the quiet stretch: fewer people in the lanes, the port and the market still working, and days you can fill by walking. The seasons guide marks January and February as the slow months, and the best organised swell of the year sits in that same window. What to wear, and why Surf is the pack those months are for, is the winter guide.
Two stretches push the other way, because the town is full and the paid version of the day is the one in front of you. Gnaoua festival week, in June, fills the medina. Mid-July to late August is the long busy season. Neither is a reason to skip Essaouira. Both are a reason to decide the shape of the days before you arrive, instead of buying them one at a time.
The last ten days of December are the busy patch inside an otherwise quiet season. Room-only rates move with the season, and they are not on this page. Live availability for a stay with no lesson attached is on the direct booking page.
5. The figure that covers the bed and the session
The free walks do not include a bed, and they do not include a lesson. That is what the pack is for. One activity a day: two nights come with two sessions, three nights with three. Solo is a bed in a mixed dorm and the price is per person. Duo is a private room and the price is the total for two people. Doubling the Duo figure is how the page gets misread. Taxes are included. Free breakfast is included on every pack, with Wi-Fi, the rooftop and the shared kitchen. Tea and pastries at 18:00 are on the house.
Surf is the pack to book when the trip should still have the water in it. The bay is sand, with no reef, and a long shallow inside, which is why a first lesson belongs here. From October to March the swell is better organised and the wind is lighter. From April to September the clean water is early, before the trade winds fill in. The lesson includes the board and the wetsuit. Bring a swimsuit and a towel. Solo, two nights, two surf sessions, starts at €78 (820 DH). What those mornings contain is the first surf-lesson week.
Cooking is the pack when the medina is the point, when someone in the pair will stay out of the water, or when the day should not depend on the beach. A class is a morning of three to four hours: the souk, then the pot, then lunch. Solo, two nights, two classes, starts at €89 (920 DH). What you cook is the cooking-class guide.
Kite / Wingfoil is on the same page, for April to September, when the afternoon wind is the reason to come. It is the larger figure. It is a different trip, not the default on a small budget. The gear is included. You tell the team whether you want the kite or the wing. The wing is the sail you hold, with no lines.
One booking is one pack. Surf and Cooking are a choice made before you pay. Anyone who wants both writes to reception first. Solo against Duo, and two nights against three, is the 2 or 3 night pack guide. What changes when you travel alone is the solo guide.
The figure is the cost of that stay, known before you arrive. It is not a claim that the same bed costs less here than on a large booking site. Those sites are useful for seeing what a town contains. Booking the pack is how the sessions and the breakfast are already attached to the dates, with the people who will be at the door.
| Pack | Solo, 2 nights | Solo, 3 nights | Duo, 2 nights | Duo, 3 nights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surf | €78 820 DH | €120 1 230 DH | €170 1 800 DH | €255 2 700 DH |
| Cooking | €89 920 DH | €130 1 380 DH | €170 1 800 DH | €254.99 2 700 DH |
| Kite / Wingfoil | €125 1 320 DH | €187 1 980 DH | €265 2 800 DH | €395 4 200 DH |
Solo is per person. Duo is the total for two. The euro amount is what the card charges. The dirham amount is the published price for a bank transfer, and it stays put when the exchange rate moves. Taxes are included. Free breakfast is included on every pack.
6. Book the pack, or book the room only
The form on the pack page asks for the pack, Solo or Duo, two or three nights, the arrival date, a name and a phone number. Card payment opens on that option. Paying in dirhams is a bank transfer via WhatsApp: the same step reaches the manager at +212 600 150 138 for the bank details. A question before you pay goes to reception on +212 605 815 025. The team speaks French, English and Arabic.
Bookings are non-refundable, and the page says so before you pay. A stay with no lesson, or nights around the pack, is an ordinary booking on the direct booking page, where the live rates sit.
